Report from Gonaives on the devastation as reported by Salonique from White Fields Overseas Mission

Dear mom and Dad, (This is Fred and Jan Green  )

Greetings to you and thanks for all the prayers.

We are alive that is all that I can say really.  The situation that we are now in is more than horrible.  There is no way to present an adequate explanation about it.

We, as a city, have lost everything.  I praise God because I still have my five boys (including Jonas), my wife, my parents and great number of my relatives.  Only God could do that for me.

We have lost everything that we have owned.  The house is left without its wall, its gates and the things that were in it, including books and papers.  I barely have a few papers saved providentially.  Mom, I have neverr seen anything like it.  The whole city is wipe out.  Right now, I am just saying you things, there is not a systematic arrangement to explain what is going on.

We barely made it to the roof of the house.  Those who did not have a concrete roof and who did not have a close neighbor or a tree high enough to be at its top are gone.  Dead bodies are all over the city.  I hear people talk about 500 people dead, that is enough for one area, for the whole city we have more than 5,000 people dead.  I am not kidding.  Some family are completely wipe out.  There is one little location everybody in it died.  All the houses gone.

Let me talk about us.  When the water reached our house we barely made it to the top.  We spent the whole night under the rain holding two of my four boys, my wife held one, and my sister Christella held one from 5 pm to 5:30 am the next day.  The next day when we saw what happen, the wall is gone, the gates are gone, the water in the house reached 7 foot high, by the time we got in it lowered to 4 foot.  We have now mud in place of books, furnitures and clothes.  We have lost everything basically.  Gine has been trying to fish something like clothes or shoes.  She did find one shoes for me, and none for her or the boys.  We are happy to be alive in spite of famine and discomfort.

For the Church, Micah is the only Church member who is not a victim of this terrible hurricane, every body of the Church is a victim.  All our members are alive, thank God.  At large, we have some dead from the other Churches.  The wall of the Church fell down, all the things we have had at the Church office are gone, broken, unable to work.  WE have found two dead bodies in the Church yard, i had to burry him.

The city as you knew it, or the house where I lived as you knew it is history now.  WE will leave the area tomorrow to go to higher places.

Time is run out, pass the message top our friends, all of those of us who survive is a story of the work of God.  Pray for us.  Every help is wonderful.  We have had brush, tooth past, some spaggeti thanks to Micah and a couple other friends.  The environment is terribly polluted with all these dead bodies (animals and human beings) laying around.  Gine cannot handle the situation.  The boys are having a terrible time.  Pray for all of us.  We don`t know when we will be able to go back to our house.

We love you.  Thanks for your prayers.

Salonique

FOR LONG-TERM SUPPORT BEING DEVELOPED - David Shelton and Reggie Thomas are working on gathering unified support from U.S. Christian and Church of Christ Churches to be sent to a unified base of support for Christian/Churches of Christ missionaries in Haiti . CAUTION should be used when trying to send support for missionaries in Haiti .  There are areas of corruption that will steal support.  David and Reggie have significant experience in knowing how to avoid the organizations that tend to have corruption. We must use people that we know we can trust.  But let’s do something!
